THERE Art & About

Art After Hours on Wednesdays at Art Gallery New South Wales (AGNSW) was the setting for the THERE team’s most recent bi-monthly social studio outing.

The Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes annual exhibition, is one that the team had been eagerly anticipating, and it didn’t disappoint.

With the usual who’s who of Australian culture – from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists all depicted through vast range of materials and techniques from oil, acrylic, watercolour to mixed media. We were spoilt for choice.

A key stand out was the People’s Choice 2016 Winner, a portrait of Sudanese refugee and lawyer Deng Adut who caught the attention of the artist Nick Stathopoulus and equally caught the attention of many of the team due to the photorealistic nature.

It was only upon approaching super close one was able to see the detailed brush strokes that made up the composition.

Other note worthy works included the expressive brushstroke and vivid use of colour use in Peter Weiss portrait, one of Australia's great art partrons by Nicholas Harding. In contrast to the subdue and intensity of Kristy Neilson's portrait of Australian actor and comedian Garry McDonald famous for his portrayal of hillarious Norman Gunston and other television characters such as Arthur Beare in Mother and Son.

It seemed across the board the team were amazed by the technique and skill by all artists involved in this years exhibition, and admired the detail within the works.

It was hard not to be impressed at the skill and talent of the budding 5-18 year old artists on display in the Young Archies who’s work and blurbs had a honesty and purity that comes at that age.

Above all, It’s always great to get the team out and about exploring what Sydney has to offer, as it has so much! But also a nice opportunity to get off and away behind the screen and desk and be social.

Funan makes the news

A recent milestone project win for THERE is formally announced in the national press. Read more.

Funan makes the news

The redevelopment of the iconic mall – Funan, located in Singapore, is featured in the national newspaper, TODAY. The article describes how the development will reinvent the regional retail scene, turning the once tech hub into a live-work-play mall.

The $560million integrated development with a GFA of 887,000sqf will see the creation of an experiential creative hub in the commercial heart of Singapore.

Along with two six story office towers and a nine story tower of co-living apartments, the main six story retail mall sets out to challenge preconceptions of what a mall should be with features such as a 4,000sqf urban farm, indoor climbing walls and a bike lane that will allow cyclists to ride right through the building.

THERE will be responsible for creating all internal/external signage and wayfinding, along with defining the brand experience throughout the built environment aided by a series of placemaking initiatives.

The Sydney Design Awards program provides marketplace recognition across Asia and Australia on a range of categories, while celebrating the creativity and courage of those who dare leading the way.

THERE dominated this year, by winning 4 of the 5 awards presented in the Environmental Graphic Design category.

"This latest recognition is a testament to the hard work, diligence and specialist knowledge that our teams bring to creating branded experiences within the built environment" says THERE founder and Executive Creative Director Paul Tabouré.

"Such a great outcome would not have been possible without the vision of our client partners, who entrusted us to deliver top-shelf creative strategy and relied on the team’s execution expertise." adds Gordon Eckel, Commercial Director at THERE.

Judged by both the Australian design industry and general public, the projects each demonstrated THERE's ability to create a sense of place through Placemaking, wayfinding, and environmental graphics that focus on staff engagement.

HEAVY ARTILLERY

No doubt everyone on social media, especially Instagram would have seen various posts over the last few months of elements from the HEAVY ARTILLERY exhibition. Xu Zhen's Thousand Armed Sculpture in particular has been featured heavily on social media feeds of art loving Sydneysiders.

The White Rabbit Gallery always brings together amazing collections of contemporary Chinese (although not always) art focusing on works produced after 2000.

Studio Bake Off!

THERE team join forces with neighbouring studios MKB and Brandhook to bake and make for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.

It was a great effort by the team with a spread of scrumptious homemade food, that definitely didn’t leave anyone with an empty stomach.

Fun and games were also had, with a guessing lolly jar competition that saw people rushing in with their lucky numbers, as well as the more competitive side coming out in some people. But this was all in the good of raising money in support of the Cancer Council and all the good they’re doing.

All in all, another successful Morning Tea which has turned into an annual event at THERE.
