Building closer bonds with the A&D audience

Ontera Envibond

Ontera design and manufacture an array of category leading flooring products, mainly for the commercial and contract markets. Their latest product, Envibond, is a technically advanced carpet backing product that offers a range of benefits from noise reduction and durability through to a reduced environmental foot print. After initially creating the product identity, we were then tasked with creating a piece that showcased the product benefits, as well as the product itself. Our response was to make inventive use of the product throughout. From the laser cut cover and continuing inside the brochure with cleverly art directed images of shoes, serving as metaphors for the products key features and benefits.

Inspired by the brand’s tagline ‘a step ahead’, the resulting brochure and product website, ‘says’ and ‘shows’ the key benefits of the product in an engaging, unexpected way that informs, inspires and delights.

THERE feature in SEGD Publication

3M featured in forward-thinking corporate environments article
We were chuffed to see our branded workplace for 3M be so prominently featured in Eg magazine – the international journal of the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD). The article looks at how forward thinking Australian businesses are creating workplaces for a new age and cites our work for 3M as a great example of how branding and wayfinding systems can provide human-centered, inspiring places to work while supporting environmental initiatives and the bottom line.

Inspiring BCG

Boston Consulting Group, Gurgaon, India
We were commissioned by Adrianse Group to develop an environmental graphics package for the new Boston Consulting Group (BCG) offices in Gurgaon, India.  We created a highly adaptable and modular graphic language to fulfil the client’s vision of an exciting and cohesive look for the space, visually conveying their brand essence of ‘transformation’ and being ‘agents of change’.

We developed a visual graphics package that was complimentary to the linear detailing and nature theme of the interior architecture as well as the circular floorplate. The project scope included various feature wall graphics and three levels of glazing graphics with varying privacy requirements and decal graphics.

A home environment for mental health care

St Vincents Private Mental Health Clinic
Treating mental health issues, particularly amongst the young, represents one of the biggest health challenges facing health care providers across Australia. We were both humbled and excited by the chance to help St Vincent’s Private Hospital create an environment that would cater to the young adult patients as well as the staff working at the facility.

As the first of its kind in Australia, the new unit will treat patients between 16 and 30 years who have a range of mental health issues requiring in-patient care. Working in partnership with architects Woods Bagot we created a ’home from home’ environment with playful imagery of items one would expect to find in any family home, together with larger nature focused scenes that help foster a calming ambience in the space. The unit was officially opened last week by Archbishop of Sydney Cardinal George Pell and you may have also have noticed it featured on ABC news.

Festive Cheers!

Thanks for a great year let’s make next year even bigger!
After another big year for us at THERE, we’d like to say thanks to all our clients, collaborators, suppliers, family, friends and followers, for making it such an enjoyable and inspiring journey. 2012 is already looking massive, we can’t wait to see what amazing things we’ll create together.

ASICS wins again

ASICS FDC Construction Awards Win
Great to see our award winning branded environment for ASICS featured in today’s Sydney Morning Herald. Congrats to the guys at FDC Construction for taking out top prize in the Master Builders Association Construction Awards in the Industrial Buildings $10-$20million category. One of the judges commented, “Most people who visit love it because they don’t expect to see something so extravagant and at such a grade-A level”. The win follows THERE’s win in the worldwide SEGD Awards for Branded Environment graphics.

Workplace vision for Ontera

Ontera Envisions Workplace Graphics
Following on from the Envisions book we created for modular carpet tile experts, Ontera, we were asked to adapt and extend our creative theme to their offices to help promote the Envisions range and also provide a dynamic visual lift to an area often seen by clients and staff.

QT Signage

QT Hotels, Gold Coast
Following on from earlier posts on our work for this inaugural hotel brand creation for AHL, we thought we’d share with you some further images that highlight some of the exterior signage and interior branding we created. The scope included all exterior and interior signage planning, design and implementation. See more of our branding work for QT here.

A Bazaar Fixx at QT

QT Hotels, Gold Coast – Fixx Cafe & Bazaar Restaurant
Part of our branding work for QT Hotel, Gold Coast, included creating identity and print materials for its new cafe and restaurant. Complementing the interiors nostalgic 50s/60s Beach Glam theme, raw materials such as hessian and timber, further enhanced with screen printing and laser etching were used to give a distinct, tactile and highly memorable feel, appropriate to the venues.

THERE in Australian Creative

Australian Creative Article
We were chuffed to see our smiling faces pop up in trade rag Australian Creative. They were interested to hear about our increasing focus on branded environment design, and it’s importance in fostering a vibrant internal culture and point of differentiation. It’s not available online, so you’ll need to pick up a copy of the magazine to see the article.

A QT is born

QT Hotel Gold Coast
Amalgamated Holdings Limited
The inaugural QT Hotel Series in the Gold Coast is born. Working with Nic Graham & Associates architects we were charged with creating a comprehensive branding and signage graphics package for the hotel, the first in what is planned as a series of themed hotels developed by AHL.

Cutting the rug (well, the carpet)

Ontera Envibond Brochure
Here’s a sneak peek at our latest brochure for long time clients and collaborators Ontera, a backing product for their carpet tiles that delivers all sorts of benefits. So many benefits we needed to come up with an interesting metaphor that could communicate all those different aspects. We’re not giving away everything just yet, so keep ‘em peeled to see the big reveal in coming weeks.

THERE + ASICS + WMK = SEGD

THERE wins SEGD Merit Award for ASICS.
There were some hi-fives and congratulatory cheers filtering around the studio when we were advised by prestigious international awards body, the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers (SEGD) that our work for ASICS Australia’s new headquarters had been recognised with a Merit Award. Here’s what the Judges had to say:

“One trend that seems prevalent in our profession is that designers will take a stock image, enlarge it on a wall, and believe it is good graphic design. What captured our attention with this project was not simply the use of large imagery, but the successful layering of information that, together with the imagery, made this a meaningful composition appropriate for an athletic company headquarters. It goes beyond the expected.”

We’re quite chuffed with the recognition, and very much agree with the distinguished juror’s comments. It’s quite easy to ‘decorate’ a space with environmental graphics, but THERE’s signature approach of creating Branded Environments goes a step further, with layers of information and visuals that engage, inspire and inform an organisation’s internal culture — all guided by a rigorous understanding of a client’s brand.

Brock Elbank - Photography Exhibition
Close friend and THERE collaborator Brock Elbank, is showcasing a 5yr photographic journey exploring the world of men’s beards and their facial hair. The show opens at Global Gallery in Paddington this Wednesday at 6pm. Nice one Brocky, now go and have a shave!

Branding THERE

THERE Branded Environment
We’ve just had some new branded environment graphics installed in our warehouse studio by friends and frequent collaborators Spike Signs. Our objective was to bring some dynamism and energy to our meeting room, usually the venue for meetings with our valued clients and suppliers.

The graphics reference ‘dazzle camouflage‘ — developed by modernist artist Sir Norman Wilkinson during World War One, as a means of camouflaging ships from the sights of German U-Boats. There’s no chance of missing our meeting room however, and we’re pleased to be ‘walking the talk’ in showcasing how workplace graphics can evoke brand values whilst creating a signature statement within a space.

Caffeinated Art

Nescafe Gold Launch
In conjunction with DemoPlus THERE created a massive coffee art installation for the launch of Nescafe’s new Gold Blend. All up we found ourselves preparing 7320 cups using 17kg of coffee, 350 litres of milk, 1480 litres of water, and then arranged them categorised by colour, resulting in the image you see above. Huge effort from all involved and quite the project management feat to get it all done in time for the big reveal to Nescafe staff. Also, thanks to the sun for throwing that shadow over the completed piece — sometimes, you can’t plan for absolutely everything!

Word Up!

Process Journal Issue Four
Our irrepressible Design Director, Clinton Duncan, has written an article for the highly regarded design magazine Process Journal. Clinton’s quite the budding scribe, he also writes for internationally renowned identity and branding blog, Brand New, as well as a regular column in Australian Infront, a design community website showcasing the best down under has to offer. It’s great to see such passion and energy for his craft, and in such an articulate and prolific manner. Nice one chap!
